Mario
Mario is a stocky Italian plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom with blue overalls, a red cap, and trademark moustache. He is the main hero of the Mushroom Kingdom and the mascot of the Japanese video game company Nintendo. Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation, and his adventures generally center on rescuing Princess Peach from the Koopa villain Bowser. Always bright and cheerful, Mario is Princess Peach's trusted friend, and he and his brother Luigi are nationally known for their bravery. -
Luigi
Mario's brother and fellow hero of the Mushroom Kingdom. Like Mario, Luigi is also Nintendo's mascot created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, the younger fraternal twin brother and sidekick of Mario. Luigi is instantly recognizable in his signature green hat and green shirt. Luigi appears in many games in the Mario series, often accompanying his brother. Luigi is taller than Mario and can jump higher. If you look closely, you might also notice that his moustache is also shaped a little differently. -
Princess Peach
Princess Peach is Mario's best friend, the princess regnant, and ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, where she resides in her castle along with Toads. She's extremely kind and is always working to create a world where everyone can live together happily. Her signature pink dress is quite lovely. Princess Peach is always game for a variety of sports, and also enjoys baking and cooking. Being the lead female character in the series, Peach's role is often the damsel in distress or donor who can help Mario. -
Toad
Toad is a humanoid with a mushroom head, created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who is depicted as a citizen of the mushroom kingdom and one of Princess Peach's most loyal servants, always working for her. Toad has red spots on his head, but others of his kind come in a variety of colors. Toad is very cheerful and loyal. He does his best to help Mario and Luigi protect the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser, even if he endangers himself in the process. While Toad is the name of an individual, it also refers to their entire race. In earlier games, however, the species was called Mushroom Retainers, and in Japan, they were called Kinoko-zoku, literally "Mushroom People". -
Bowser
The King of the Koopas is a fictional character who is the main antagonist of the Nintendo Mario series. Bowser is Mario's archrival and is always causing trouble in the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser is a formidable foe, he possesses incredible strength and can even breathe fire. Bowser commands many subordinates, including Koopas, Goombas, Bullet Bills, and Shy Guys. Whenever he sets his sights on the Mushroom Kingdom, his plans are often foiled by Mario and his friends. Although Bowser worked with Mario in several games, his ultimate goal was to kidnap Princess Peach and defeat Mario and Luigi to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom. -
Yoshi
Yoshi is a virtual green dinosaur, Mario's reliable sidekick, from Yoshi's Island. Yoshi debuted in Super Mario World (1990) on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as Mario and Luigi's sidekick. Others of his kind may be other colors such as red, blue, pink, and yellow. Yoshi is kind and carefree. Yoshi has a variety of abilities that stand out relative to other characters in the Mario franchise. His tongue can extend a considerable distance to eat enemies, grab distant objects, or act as a grappling hook to gain access to otherwise inaccessible areas. -
Daisy
Daisy is a fictional character in the Mario series of video games, whose yellow dress and gorgeous accessories are her hallmarks. Daisy is a tomboy, showing more of a typical boy than a typical girl, as she proves to be athletic, energetic, tough, aggressive, and likes to get dirty. She enjoys playing various sports with Mario and friends. Rumor has it that she is Luigi's lover, just like Princess Peach is Mario's lover. This became the plot of the 1993 live-action film Super Mario Bros, in which Luigi rescues Daisy from King Cooper. She's also the only woman in Mario Tennis Aces to wear shorts instead of a skirt. She also enjoys shopping and dining at fancy restaurants, but she's happy to give up that enjoyment to train. -
Wario
Wario wears purple overalls, and a yellow hat, and has an instantly recognizable zigzag moustache. The self-professed archrival of Mario. Wario and Mario have known each other since they were babies. He's got a boisterous personality and doesn't sweat the small things. He loves garlic and making money. His name is a combination of Mario's name and the Japanese word warui, which means "bad". Wario was designed by Hiroji Kiyotake and voiced by Charles Martinet, who has voiced many other characters in the series, including Mario, Luigi, and Waluigi. Wario has become the protagonist and antihero of the Wario Land and WarioWare series, spanning the handheld and console markets. In addition to appearing in spinoffs of the Mario series, he has also appeared in other Nintendo properties, such as in the Super Smash Bros. series of cross-fighting games. -
Waluigi
Waluigi is a fictional character in the Mario franchise. He plays the role of Luigi's arch-rival and accompanies Wario in spin-offs from the main Mario series, often for the sake of causing mischief and problems. Waluigi is willing to put in a lot of effort to best Mario and Luigi if only to annoy them. His long arms and long legs help keep him competitive at sports. Waluigi was created during the development of the game Mario Tennis as Luigi's nemesis and Wario's tag team partner. He was created by Fumihide Aoki and voiced by Charles Martinet. His name is a portmanteau of Luigi's name and the Japanese adjective warui meaning "bad"; hence, a "bad Luigi". He was said to be a mischievous and cunning man. -
Rosalina
Rosalina debuts in Super Mario Galaxy, where she acts as a non-player character who resides in the Comet Observatory, the game's hub world. She is a mysterious lady who travels the galaxy accompanied by her family of star-like creatures called Lumas. Rosalina is the adoptive mother of Lumas, a fictional species of stars in the game, and also a watcher of the cosmos. Rosalina may seem a bit distant, but she is actually quite kind-hearted. She is the adoptive mother of the Lumas. Though her home is among the stars, she'll sometimes join Mario and their friends on their adventures. When Rosalina's character was in early development, the Super Mario Galaxy development team contemplated having her character be related to Princess Peach. This relationship did not remain as an element of the final story but is the reason for the design similarities between Peach and Rosalina. -
Bowser Jr.
Bowser Jr. is the son of Bowser, the main antagonist in the Mario series of video games. Bowser Jr. is a yellow-skinned Koopa similar to his father with the same yellow and tan skin complexion. He has a light green head, a top-ponytail of orange-red hair held by a black tie, and usually wears a bandana. Bowser Jr. is small but has inherited great strength from his father. He often helps his father to kidnap Princess Peach and defeat Mario, but in the end, wants nothing more than to impress his father. Bowser Jr.’s defining traits are his striking resemblance to his father, his energetic and driven personality, his expertise in mechanics and technology, and his heavy use of his Junior Clown Car and Magic Paintbrush. He may throw a tantrum if things don't go his way. He's known to cause plenty of trouble and can be a bit selfish. -
Boo
Mischievous ghosts often appear in dark, abandoned places. They may be spooky ghosts, but they're also incredibly shy. They will freeze in place and cover their eyes if someone looks right at them. A Boo's most common pattern of attack is to sneak up on the player (usually Mario) from behind while they are facing away from them; however, they stop their attack if looked at. Being ghosts, they are usually invincible, and unable to be defeated without certain items or conditions. It has been implied that Boos may have been other living species before they became Boos, but this has not been made clear. With Boo being one of the more popular Mario enemies, their image has been used in official Nintendo merchandise, such as plush dolls, as well as cookie cutters. -
Donkey Kong
The king of the jungle whose trademark is his red necktie, which bears his initials. Donkey Kong can hurl giant barrels with the greatest of ease and is so powerful the ground shakes when he pounds on the ground. He loves bananas and always keeps a large stash of them in his treehouse. Donkey Kong first appeared as the titular antagonist of the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong alongside protagonist Mario and damsel in distress, Pauline). As Mario, the player must reach Donkey Kong at the top of each stage, where he is holding Pauline captive. Donkey Kong attempts to hinder the player's progress by throwing barrels, springs, and other objects toward Mario. -
Diddy Kong
Donkey Kong's trusted, friend and partner. His trademarks are his red shirt with yellow stars and red cap. Though not as strong as DK, Diddy Kong is agile and a great jumper. He's fast as well, and a great ally for helping DK protect his banana stash. He first appears in Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as a young boisterous monkey who had one main goal: To become a video game hero just like his friend, Donkey Kong. He accompanies Donkey Kong throughout Donkey Kong Island to battle King K. Rool and returns their banana hoard.
