Overview
Paper Mario™: The Origami King is a Mario series game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo in 2020. It is the sixth game in the Mario series. The game's story is set as Mario and his friends embark on a journey to prevent the mushroom kingdom from turning into origami. To do this, the player, Mario, has to liberate Princess Peach's castle.
Paper Mario™: The Origami King is a game that combines multiple gameplays. It contains elements of action-adventure, role-playing, and puzzle games. Players need to control Mario and fight enemies in the game world in a turn-based gameplay style. In the game, enemies are scattered in a circular circle. Players eliminate enemies by rotating the ring horizontally and vertically to organize them into patterns.
Gameplay
Paper Mario™: The Origami King is ostensibly a simple turn-based combat game, but over time players will discover its complexity. In the game, the player's Mario is located in a circle, and there are four concentric circles radiating from the circle. Each ring is divided into twelve sections, and players will see 48 tiles around the plumber. The player's enemies are arranged on the tiles in a chaotic formation.
► Each turn of this Mario game is essentially a puzzle game.
► Players are tasked with sliding tiles to line up their enemies so Mario can attack them in groups.
► Players can only determine their attack plan with a limited number of moves and a limited time.
► Puzzle mechanics up the ante in battle. If the player can't solve the puzzle, the battle will be harder to win.
► If the player aligns the enemy perfectly and presses A on the right side while Mario is attacking, he will get bonus damage and can destroy all enemies at once.
► If the player fails to line up the enemies correctly, they will be attacked, and when it is the player's turn again, the enemies will be reshuffled. Players will need to solve a new sliding puzzle.
Review
In the game Paper Mario: The Origami King, you will be asked to represent yourself as Mario to fight against the army of Origami adversaries. You might be wondering what Origami means if you are not familiar with the Japanese culture or just simply never heard the word. It’s like one of the most famous art paper folding art in Japanese culture. There are also all kinds of paper folding arts in Asian countries according to my knowledge. Anyway, I’m glad that Nintendo decides to build up a game in its own culture and the game is most definitely a smart angle to explore the world of paper arts.
The game doesn’t make you play it with one-time stickers and cars and there are quite a lot to see in the game but the mechanisms are quite simple so not many decisions can be made while playing the game. I like the idea of bringing culture to the games and I respect Nintendo donning that but the game could be better in so many ways. Speaking of culture in games, it reminds me of the famous worldly known game Genshin Impact where multi countries' cultures and its spirit were represented at different locations on the map. To exceed, I feel like the company of Mihoyo undoubtedly did a great job of finishing up and creating the game. Well, The Origami King is a good start where there will be villains with humorous characteristics.
The storyline is more interesting and the basic structure is probably hoped for as a Mario Series fan. Unlike the previous paper games of the Mario Series, this game supports a big world which is great to hear as a player. I feel like the world provided players with more continuity and improves the overall game experience. There will be a larger range of variety and freedom compared to the other paper games. But unfortunately enough, there are still things you will still have to follow and you can only go to one new destination at one time. So it’s not technically an open-world game. I love the idea of making this game a great big world game because it’s independent of the other Paper Mario Series and there is more to see in the game contents as well.
The world also has puzzles for you to solve and you will be able to unlock abilities to solve different new puzzles that are on your way to success. One of the features that I love the most is the fascinating feeling of exploring the world like in an adventurous game just like the first Mario game. The scenery and the background are always different and pretty to check out. You can battle different bosses in different parts of the world which feel so realistic. You could be fighting some boss in the desert at one point and get through the forest. It’s interesting to play with the settings and there are some sub-mini-games for you to try out in the game. The variety and freedom in this generation make me feel connected more and the pleasure that comes with it makes me want to spend more time on this game.
If you never heard of paper games, this game will be your guide and tutorial game series for sure. I never tried any of the Paper games ever but I’ve tried the other Mario Series games. This game has the Mario elements you need to see if you are a big Mario fan and the game is quite straight forward so it’s not hard for me to get used to it as a newbie at this type of game.
